CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Liam Moffatt, Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA) Class of 2015, will be representing Canada in the Snowboard Cross in Beijing. His event is on February 10. In addition to graduating from CVA, he also did a postgraduate year there in 2015-16.
“I’m beyond grateful for the skills, training and integral development of my career that I gained at CVA,” said Moffatt. “Representing the incredible CVA community all the way from Beijing and on the world stage is a huge honor for me and I can’t wait to compete on Thursday.”
“We are so proud of Liam,” said Kate Punderson, CVA’s Head of School. “He is continuing the strong tradition of Snowboard Cross here at CVA and Sugarloaf. He was inspired by other world-class riders who honed their skills here, such as Seth Wescott, Nikki Pilavakis-Davoren, and Alex Tuttle. And Liam is now inspiring all our student-athletes. With a dream, determination, world-class training and coaches, and a supportive community – anything is possible.”
Moffatt’s coach while at CVA, Mike Mallon, said, “Liam was an outstanding athlete and team member in his five years at CVA. Very early on, it became clear that he had the ability to compete at the highest level and it has been so fun to watch him mature into one of the top athletes in the world in boardercross for team Canada. He has been consistently showing the speed needed to qualify in the top 10 and now has found the confidence to stay focused and trust his abilities through some heats. It is going to be so exciting for CVA, his community at home in Nova Scotia and his family to see these dreams unfold for him.”
Snowboard Cross is the official name for the competitive downhill event more commonly known by snowboarders and extreme sports fans as boardercross. In addition to Moffatt, there are four CVA graduates who are coaching in Beijing: Mike Day, Class of 1989 is Mikaela Shiffrin’s head coach; Forest Carey, Class of 1994 is the Head Alpine Men’s Coach, Nessa Dziemian, Class of 2012 is the Head Coach for the Brazil Moguls Team and Nick Stagers, class of 1997 is coaching an athlete on Alpine Team from Ecuador.
