AUGUSTA, Maine - Registered Maine Guides were recently presented with the Maine Tourism Award for Commitment to Customer Service at the 2012 Maine Governor's Conference on Tourism at Sunday River Resort.

The awards are presented by the Maine Office of Tourism to those who lead by example. The individuals and businesses honored are nominated by their peers in the tourism industry.

Maine Office of Tourism Director Carolann Ouellette, and Maine Tourism Commission Chair Greg Sweetser presented the award to Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock who accepted it on behalf of all Registered Maine Guides.

There are approximately 4,000 Registered Maine Guides, and license classifications now exist for hunting, inland fishing, recreational activities (including boating, snowmobiling and camping), sea kayaking, and tidewater fishing.

Guides provide a ripple economic impact to accommodations, restaurants, gas stations and local stores. They expand guest offerings at sporting camps and other lodgings, and, most importantly, they provide safe, fun and memorable outdoor experiences for people of all ages and walks of life.

"Registered Maine Guide is a highly respected and rigorously attained title. It carries prestige and allure that is synonymous with the long and storied tradition of Maine's sporting heritage. I commend all the men and women who are part of this program and have shared the beauty and adventure of Maine to countless visitors for the past 115 years," said Tourism Director Carolann Ouellette.

More than 350 tourism and hospitality professionals attended the Governor's Conference on Tourism which also featured educational workshops and a trade show.
